Apparently we're raising two surfers!

I remember when Niko and Lena were afraid of the waves. We spent a week at the beach the first summer they were home and I think the only way they were willing to touch the water was if it was in a bucket.

Not any more.

I took the kids to the Outer Banks Thursday. Lena spent the whole day way out past the breakers with the big kids. She learned when to dive under a wave, when to ride over it and when to point her board to the sand and ride! Watching her reminded me of vacations at the Jersey Shore when I was young. I was always way out there -- so much so that my mom would worry. It also brought back memories of my dad. When I was young he would take me out there on our old blue raft. I'd lay on top -- he's hang on one side. When I was older we would make our way through the waves -- the same way Lena did -- together and then ride them back to the beach.

Niko was a little more timid when it came to riding the waves, but when 16-year-old Fraser showed him how to use the skim board (I used to skim with my dad too), he was hooked!

So today Niko got his own skim board. And he spent much of the afternoon getting the hang of it. At first he couldn't stay on for even a second. But by the end of the day he was getting in some good rides!
